2 1/2 hours. 1 class session. Have fun learning the basics you need to know to paddle a kayak safely and effectively. Using sit-on-top kayaks, we will begin by learning how to control our boats. Next we will learn some maneuvers and techniques that make kayaking more fun and safe. Then we're off to tour Mission Bay for a chance to use our new skills in action. Be sure to wear clothes that you will comfortable swimming in as we will be getting wet.

12 hours. 4 class sessions. Sea kayaks are sleek, fast and very seaworthy. With their sit-inside design and the skills you learn in this class, sea kayaks can become an extension of your body and allow you to glide effortlessly over the water. In this class you will learn the basic paddle strokes, assisted and solo re-entry methods, and touring techniques necessary for low risk and fun sea kayaking adventures. This class will explore Mission Bay and, if conditions permit, paddle into the ocean! No prior paddling experience is necessary, so start today!

6 hours. 2 class sessions. Advance you sea kayaking skills in this fun class. We will review the skills from Sea Kayaking 1, with an emphasis on making them more efficient and effective. We will cover new, more advanced skills for a wider variety of conditions, such as surf zone and open water environments. You will learn the basic skill needed to develop your "Eskimo roll." The class will include basic navigation skills. We will practice handling wind, waves and currents. In this class you can continue to improve your sea kayaking skills in a fun atmosphere, so come join us.

6 Hours. 2 Class Sessions. The surf zone can be one of the most exciting places a sea kayaker paddles. This course will teach you how to effectively and safely kayak in the surf zone and open water. We will cover controlled surf launching and landing as well as kayak surfing. We will also cover basic navigation and float plans. On day two we will put your newly learned skills to use as we launch our sea kayaks through the surf at Mission Beach and paddle in an open water environment.

Prerequisite: Sea Kayaking 2 or consent of instructor.

3 1/2 hours. 1 session. Everyone who sees the amazing coves and sea caves on La Jolla wants to explore them by water. This is your opportunity! We'll meet at the Aquatic Center and head out together for La Jolla Shores. At the Shores we will prepare our sit-on-top kayaks and launch into our adventure. If conditions permit, we will paddle into and around the amazing caves, rock formations and sheltered coves found in the area. Don't be surprised to see a variety of wildlife, including birds, sea lions and seals, and many different species of fish.

Prerequisite: Some kayaking experience is recommended but not required.

This class meets one session.

4 hours. 1 session. Enjoy the beauty and romance of Mission Bay under a full moon! We will meet before sunset for an informal potluck barbecue (we supply the charcoal and grill, you bring your favorite item to cook). After a short skills session, we will launch at sunset for a pleasant paddle under the moon and stars. Please bring a change of clothes for after the trip (your paddling clothes may get damp) and we'll supply all the equipment. No prior paddling experience is necessary, so come join the fun!

4 1/2 hours. 1 session. Now that you’ve taken Sea Kayaking I or II, let’s get out there and practice your new skills. Here is your chance to get more distance under your keel and see the coast from a new perspective. We will meet at the MBAC and then caravan to La Jolla Shores. We will launch from the Shores and paddle along the coast to Mission Bay, viewing the local wildlife, geomorphic structures, and practicing efficient touring techniques. This intermediate distance paddle is a challenge, and a great step for developing your kayaking skills under the supervision of our instructors.
