Fall Provides Ideal Time for Surfing

With small class sizes, warm water, and less crowded beaches, this fall season is the ideal time to learn to surf, even if you've never surfed before!

You don't have to be a diehard surfer to enjoy the conditions this fall. Late season south swells combined with early season north swells have created ideal conditions for the beginning surfer. Warm water currents have made the typically cooler Southern California water temperatures quite mild and you may not even need a wetsuit to paddle out. If you do, the instructors at the Mission Bay Aquatic Center will be happy to rent one to you for $1 to use during your class.

Never surfed before? Surfing classes at the Mission Bay Aquatic Center are designed to provide a safe and fun environment to learn this favorite Southern California pastime in a supervised setting. MBAC surf instructors are the most highly trained surf instructors in San Diego and teach university surf classes for the San Diego State University Exercise and Nutritional Sciences Department. Our equipment is top notch with many brand new BZ softboards. The softboards are designed for easy learning and the safety of you and those around you.

You can learn in one MBAC surfing class what could take you months and even years to learn on your own! We hear it all the time. People tell us stories of buying used surfboards and spending months trying to catch a wave. After taking our class, they have the skills and confidence to progress and they often wonder why they waited so long. Lots of students even choose to re-enroll in the same classes because they enjoyed the class so much and prefer the attention that comes with supervised instruction.

The MBAC has a class to fit your schedule. We offer two surfing classes for the beginning surfer: Beginning Surfing, and Intro Surf Clinic. Beginning Surfing is a two-week course and is our most popular surf class. The class moves along at a comfortable pace and allows for the most practice time in the water with instructors. The Intro Surf Clinic is a one-weekend course perfect for people with busy schedules, or who own their own boards and prefer to practice on their own. Both classes are designed with the beginner in mind and cover all the fundamentals needed to enjoy surfing safely. It's not uncommon to see a mother and her high school child enjoying a class alongside a recent retiree paddling into the ocean for his or her very first time.
