La Jolla Festival Arts provides watersports opportunities for persons with disabilitiesSaturday night concert new this year!EVENT DATES: June 24-25, 9:00-5:00pm, UCSD CampusFor people with disabilities, finding affordable and accessible recreation opportunities can be a daunting task. That's where the Torrey Pines Kiwanis Club steps in to help. For the past 20 years they have been hosting annual La Jolla Festival of the Arts™ to raise money to provide affordable recreation opportunities for the disability community. As a beneficiary of the program, the Mission Bay Aquatic Center has been able to design and build accessible water-skiing and kayaking equipment, and to provide over 200 people sailing instruction who otherwise may not have been able to afford or access the equipment. The festival is a spectacular two-day event that features more than 190 award-winning artists from around the country. It is one of the most prestigious and popular festivals in Southern California and has been recognized as the number one art show in San Diego County. This year, the event will host a saturday night concert by renown guitarists Wayne Johnson and Doyle Dykes. Click here for the complete entertainment schedule and information. But perhaps the best part of the festival is its mission. It was established to raise funds to support programs for people with disabilities and to bring superior quality fine art to the San Diego community. All the proceeds from the event benefit more than 1,500 people each year in as many as 25 programs for physically challenged San Diegans. Some of the programs include adaptive snow skiing, karate, wheelchair roadracing, camping, wheelchair tennis, water skiing, quadriplegic rugby, therapeutic horseback riding and art and education programs for children. The festival has been a remarkable success. In the inaugural year, 1987, the event consisted of 60 artists and 10 food vendors which attracted 1,000 visitors. Now, the La Jolla Festival of Arts and Food Faire™ has expanded dramatically to more than 190 award and attracting more than 15,000 attendees each year. This year's festival will be Saturday, June 24-25, 2006 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The Festival is held on the University of California, San Diego's East Campus in La Jolla, CA; on the corner of Genesee Avenue and Regents Road, three blocks north of Westfield Shoppingtown/University Towne Centre.
