Owning and maintaining your own boat can be an expensive proposition. Renting equipment for day use is the cost effective way to sail, windsurf, paddle, waterski or row in San Diego. The Aquatic Center's recreational equipment rental program offers the use of sailboats, windsurfers, kayaks, rowing wherries, singles, shells and skippered waterski boats for your personal recreational enjoyment. Prices are kept low by the users rigging and unrigging the equipment themselves. Users caring for the equipment has created a system that keeps the boats looking good. The better you care for your boat, the better shape it will be in when you come back to use it. To qualify for use on a particular piece of equipment you must have either taken a class using that equipment (so you know the proper rigging and use procedures) or have passed an orientation (See Orientations below).

EQUIPMENT

All our equipment is of the highest quality. Included for individual checkout are Sabots, Lasers, Holder 14's, Hobie Cats, kayaks, windsurfers (Fanatic 370 and the Mistral Superlight II), rowing wherries, training singles and all flotation devices and other support equipment. Wetsuits are available at one dollar per use. J/24 keelboats and Ski Nautique waterski boats are available with a skipper by advance reservation.

ELIGIBILITY

Students, faculty, staff and alumni of all San Diego County colleges and universities.

ORIENTATIONS

Sailing and windsurfing orientation sessions are available to customers who have an extensive background of knowledge, skills, and experience using a particular boat or piece of equipment. The orientation is required to acquaint you with the use of the Aquatic Center equipment, storage location, and proper rigging and put away procedures. Orientations are not instructional. A thorough knowledge of sailing or windsurfing is necessary. Written and practical knowledge will be tested. Orientations are available on Saturdays and Sundays between the hours of 11:00 am and 1:00 pm. You must all ahead to assure availability. The fee for the orientations is $15.00/$25.00. There is no orientation required for the sit-on-top kayaks. Keelboats and wakeboard/waterski boats are not available for rent without a MBAC skipper and therefore do not require pre-qualification. Rental rates for keelboats and wakeboard/waterski boats including a MBAC skipper are listed below.

OPTIONAL DAMAGE WAIVER

The skipper of any Aquatic Center vessel is financially responsible for his/her actions. To reduce your financial liability for rented equipment to $100.00, a damage waiver fee of $3.00 per 6-use care, $2.00 per 3-use card or $1.00 per one-time rental is available at time of purchase. This covers the cost of equipment damage to Aquatic Center vessels only. Call or visit the Aquatic Center for more details.

FEES

Each rental is followed by two fees. The first fee (lower of the two) is for current SDSU/UCSD students only, as the MBAC is subsidized by student fees from these universities. This lower fee also applies to faculty/staff who have purchased a UCSD Recreation Card (the cards must be shown). The second fee is for all other eligible participants (see Eligibility on this page above).

Recreational Use Cards are good for one (1) year from date of purchase.
