12 hours. 4 class sessions. Instruction is divided between classroom lectures, dry land skill practice and on-the-water coaching. Skills that will be taught include rigging, steps to sailing, terminology, sailing theory and water safety. Two sizes of boards, five sail sizes and a dry land simulator are available to give everyone a successful experience. Level 1 certification allows sailing in winds up to 12 knots and a sail size up to 5 sq. meters.

6 hours. 2 class sessions. Instruction is given in the use of the 5.6, 6.2 sq. meter, full battened sails. Topics include (but are not limited to) rigging, the shore start, foot steering, and jibing theory. Time on the water is spent on stance improvement, sailing upwind and tacking and jibing. Level 2 certification allows sailing in winds up to 15 knots and a sail size up to 6.2 sq. meters.

Prerequisite: Level 1 Windsurfing.

This class meets one weekend.

3 hours. 1 class session. Instruction is given to prepare the student for sailing in higher winds. Topics may include harness use and adjustment, gear selection, beach starts, jibing, use of the footstraps and rig tuning. Call the Head Windsurfing Instructor at 858-488-2040, ext. 208, to schedule the date and time. Completion of Level 3 will allow sailing in up to 18 knots of wind and a sail size up to 7.8 sq. meters.

Prerequisite: Completion of Level 2 Windsurfing and a minimum of 10 hours sailing on your own time.
